Just before 7pm as the beer flowed behind the Kenny it did look an attacking line-up. And three teenagers starting, including two of our own.
But early doors it was back to what we witnessed quite a lot last season. A quality ball over and some how Burnley were running straight at our keeper with nobody back.
Yes we had more possession. But in truth Burnley could easily have scored 8, and you simply can’t be as open as that in any league, Premier League or Championship.
There was a brief twenty minute period just after half time during which Tahith scored a fine team goal after another quality ball in from Baptiste (similar to his delivery versus Celta Vigo) and a lovely touch from Alfie.
But that only led to Burnley banging another two in before Scott Parker effectively declared and the game tapered out into a silent whisper.
Stunned was the reaction of most of the Kenny end.
A lot of words in the programme about what a tough transfer window it has been. Transfers must be for the long term. We’ve got injured players coming back soon.
But the reality is there are 8 more games this season and it will be non-stop. We’ve lost 4 first teamers over the summer, and so far only two have come in.
We haven’t replaced Tommy Lockyer, and in a way that’s not surprising as he is irreplaceable. But there’s been a Tommy shaped hole in that defence and it needs filling particularly now Osho has departed, and Burke and Mads are still some weeks away.
Apparently Holmes can’t play in a three which is why we started with two full backs as central defenders.
But in midfield having lost Barkley and Lokonga, we must surely be in the market for at least two new arrivals.
Lots of questions to answer for recruitment. It could well get worse with Portsmouth and Preston away, but there needs to be at least 5 arrivals before this transfer window shuts just after the home game with QPR on the 30th August.
