After the emotions experienced throughout the club following Tom Lockyer’s cardiac arrest at Bournemouth, today Luton Town produced an inspirational performance epitomising everything their fantastic captain stands for.
From minute one Town were all over Newcastle. On minute four the entire crowd stood to applaud Lockyer, an ovation superbly joined by the Geordie away fans, who had unveiled an incredible banner of support before kick off.
Sir Robbie Edwards had brought in Gabe Osho for Lockyer, and it wasn’t long before midfield dynamos Ross Barkley and Albert Sambi Lokonga had the ball on some string. Osho made a vital block from Guimaraes, and somehow Wilson missed from a couple of yards on the rare occasions Newcastle did attack.
On 25 minutes a superb corner delivery from Alfie was flicked on by Ross and there to nod in was Andros Townsend celebrating his first headed goal for 13 years.
Ross then produced the moment of the season so far with a 30 yard thunderbolt that cruelly smashed against the bar, hit the keeper, and just failed to go in.
Second half it was not a case of hanging on, although memories of the late goals conceded against Arsenal and Liverpool were still strong in many supporter minds. Luckily, this time we had the colossus that is Mads Andersen to bring on, and with the rest of the team he repelled anything Newcastle could throw at us.
A magnificent 3 points. Earned for our No 4 Tom Lockyer.
