In a season of highs for thirty glorious minutes the Luton Town team looked like they had reached new levels. A towering header from a reborn Elijah leaving the best Premier League keeper cowering in his net had seen Luton Town take a half-time lead against Champions City.
There was no early conceding in the second half either, as Town held out until well into the 62nd minute before an unfortunate series of events saw the ball break to Bernardo who flashed a belter into the far corner. Just like the Olise goal for Palace, and the Neto strike for Wolves, it took something sensational to beat Tomas Kaminski.
Distracted by a crowd appeal for handball when the ball was revealed to have hit the player’s face in the build-up, unlucky Mengi then found himself on the wrong foot and failed to clear a ball across the box leaving Grealish to tap home the winner.
Credit to Robbie who still went for it with a series of attacking subs, at one point we had Brown, Clark, Elijah, Carlton all on the field. But it wasn’t to be.
Let’s be totally fair, this was not as hard a luck story as Arsenal, or Liverpool, or Spurs, or Wolves. City dominated for much of the second half. But to push them so close given the vast gulf in resources between the clubs must again be highlighted as a tremendous credit to Luton Town Football Club.
We now enter an interesting period of the season with close to a fully fit squad. And statistically a run of 6 games up until Newcastle away that have got points in them. And we will need to pick up points now if the gap between relegation and safety – currently 4 points – is not to get any wider.
First though a very tricky trip to in-form Bournemouth.
