The Hatters exited the cup on Tuesday night after fans were treated to the rare sight of a striker grabbing five goals in a single game. Sadly it wasn’t one of our own but the Viking himself who corrected a record of never having previously scored against Luton.
Four of the goals were set up by Kevin De Bruyne. Watching from the Kenny you can’t help thinking 1) how far City have come in the years since the oil money arrived, and 2) just what punishment they will get for the 115 charges the Premier League seem to be taking an eternity to decide on.
For a very brief spell in the second half when Jordan Clark grabbed his second exceptional goal of the game to make it 3-2, Luton were in the contest. But for the remainder there was a lot of space behind our defence which was ruthlessly exploited.
This is currently a Town side missing key personnel – obviously Tommy at the back, Lokonga in midfield, Elijah up front – but it was an exceptional game to watch with 8 goals providing full value for a capacity crowd.
The real business starts again on Saturday when we take on Villa at home.
Confidence amongst the fans you sense is just beginning to falter following three successive defeats, but after Villa we start a run of “easier” games although we know by now, nothing in this League is easy.
